Washington — What happened to Washington last week could have long-standing implications for the state, and ultimately, its skiers. Heavy rain and winds across the state last week caused significant damage. A Reddit user described it best in their post caption: “I don’t think we understand how utterly fucked the situation is in Washington state right now.”

The ski resort that has the most at stake appears to be Stevens Pass. The only way to reach the ski resort is to go on US Highway 2. KOMO News reports that parts of the road are now washed out, and it will take time to fix. Bob Ferguson, the Governor of Washington, said at a press conference yesterday that the Highway could be closed for months.

“It’s premature to guess exactly how to estimate exactly how long that will be, but that is obviously a major highway,” said Governor Ferguson. “We understand the patience of businesses and individuals, and human lives, about not having that highway available for an extended period of time. We’re going to do everything we possibly can to repair it as quickly as possible, but it is literally underwater in stages. There are major, major issues on that roadway.”

Stevens Pass issued a statement last night regarding this proclamation. Employees can still reach the ski resort via the East side, but this is a significant detour for Seattle skiers and riders. That entryway to Stevens Pass also reportedly has damage. This closure will also impact the mountain town of Leavenworth.

Crystal Mountain is also dealing with road issues, but there appears to be more confidence in a quicker fix. The ski resort says it won’t be able to open until at least Thursday.
