An Italian ski resort has ignited a climate controversy after using a helicopter to bring snow up to their ski slopes. According to Corriere del Trentino, several environmentalist groups, including Extinction Rebellion and the WWF, have criticized the move for doing more harm than good in moving the snow.
The slopes of Monte Bondone were apparently well covered with snow before strong winds came in and swept away the coverage. As a result, on December 5th, the company decided to send a helicopter to transport the missing snow. Snow was made in the valley before being airlifted to the high peak.
According to Trento Funivie, the company that operates Monte Bondone, losses would have ranged from approximately €300,000 to €400,000 if the slopes remained closed, with lost ski pass sales, potential shop closures, and possible cancellations at accommodations.
Environmentalists, on the other hand, point out the serious impact this operation has on the environment, with more than 40 helicopter trips being required to transport the snow. Their reports state that at least 1.5 tons of COâ‚‚ were released into the atmosphere through this operation.
