Hermon, Maine — After months of uncertainty, the future is finally looking brighter for New Hermon Mountain.
Yesterday, New Hermon Mountain announced the latest developments regarding its sale process. Previously, the owners stated that if no new buyers came in, they would shut the ski area down following the 2025-26 season. If closed, the land would have likely been developed for housing. That happens a decent amount, as one recently closed New York ski area is going to become that. The reason for this announcement is that the owners want to retire.
After a failed sale, a new group of locals has stepped up to acquire the ski area. While not official yet, they’re in the final stages of the deal process. If finalized, the new owners intend to make it a year-round destination, including new offseason activities and hosting special events.
A previous local effort fell short because the couple did not secure the necessary financing to finalize the deal.
New Hermon Mountain opened for the season on December 13th. Since then, they’ve been keeping skiers and riders informed on social media with snowmaking photos and updated hours. Cheers to Bill and Marlene Whitcomb for all their work in keeping this gem open, and let’s hope the deal finalizes so it can keep going.
About New Hermon Mountain
Situated a ten minute drive away from Bangor, New Hermon Mountain (also known as Hermon Mountain for some reason) serves as a feeder hill to the larger options in Maine. The ski area features 20 trails, 3 lifts, a vertical drop of 350 feet, and night skiing. Outside of skiing and riding, there’s also a tubing park.
In the summertime, there doesn’t appear to be much going on there. As mentioned in their social media post, this is a future business opportunity for new ownership.
