Ski goggle companies are always finding new ways to improve their products, which have included magnetic lenses. This type of lens allows you to put it in or change to another one depending on visibility and other factors. Unfortunately, one magnetic lens resulted in a life-altering injury for one avid snowboarder.
In a series of videos by Shelby Perry, also known as @eyehesive, she shared her life-altering goggle story. Around four years ago, she was snowboarding when she crashed into a tree. Her magnetic lens fell off her goggle, and a tree branch ended up taking out her left eye. It’s permanently altered, although it does look pretty cool.
Since then, she’s created Eyehesive, an adhesive eye patch intended to help those whose lives have been altered in situations like hers. It’s an inspiring story that shows her resiliency and entrepreneurial spirit.
Ultimately, this isn’t saying that you shouldn’t get a goggle with magnetic lenses. This situation is a reminder to discuss these lenses with a retailer or a gear expert to understand their protections. Since her injury, goggle companies have made significant improvements to them. Some things to look for include safety latches and magnet quality.
So, before getting your next pair of goggles, do your research on the quality of the lenses, especially if you’re buying an older pair.
