Backcountry skiing comes with a lot of obvious and some not-so-obvious risks. Avalanches are the obvious and well known one, but there’s plenty of hidden obstacles lying beneath the snow. With no ski patrol around to find or mark them, these can be a serious danger. While filming for his newest film, ‘FLIPBOOK’, last season, professional skier Parkin Costain fell through a 60-foot hidden chimney in the snow.
Costain called it the gnarliest crash of his career, and it’s pretty easy to see why. While he seemed to be mostly alright following the fall, it could have winded up so, so much worse. We’re certainly glad to see he’s okay, and frankly we’re impressed with the ability to recover from a 60-foot fall like that so quickly.
