A bizarre encounter on the slopes of Keystone Resort in Summit County, Colorado, ended with two parties receiving summons to court for disorderly conduct.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a skier believed that a snowboarder downhill from her was taking turns that were too wide, claiming he nearly caused several collisions including one with her.
The woman stopped near a sign on the trail and flagged the snowboarder down, letting him know that she believed he was acting dangerously. The snowboarder stated that he had always been downhill of her and thus always had the right of way. He then rode off.
The woman and her husband apparently continued to follow the man, skiing near him down the mountain. While accounts of the situation differ, the snowboarder and the husband wound up on the ground in a short scuffle. Neither party was injured and, after an investigation, both were issued a summons to court.
The exact details of the incident aren’t extremely clear, so assigning blame isn’t possible based on the information provided. However, the downhill skier or snowboarder does have the right of way, and it’s the responsibility of the uphill skier to leave space and avoid the person below.
