Union Dale, Pennsylvania — Despite rumors over the past year or so of a sale, Elk Mountain is staying under its current ownership.
Yesterday, Elk Mountain clarified its ownership status before the start of its 2025-26 season. There have been rumors on Facebook regarding the sale of the ski resort. Reportedly, Elk’s General Manager said on a Facebook post last year that the ski resort was for sale. However, Elk Mountain explained on Facebook that it had not been sold. They admitted that it was previously on the market during an unspecified time period, but it now appears to be off the market. Elk is owned by Joe Moore, who’s run the mountain since the 1960s.

While this post may bring uncertainty regarding its future, it’s clear that the current management group isn’t throwing in the towel. Snowmaking operations are well underway, meaning an opening is coming soon.
About Elk Mountain
Opened back in 1959, Elk was one of the first public ski areas in the state. Growth came in the 1980s, when the ski resort modernized its facilities and snowmaking system. Elk Mountain features 27 trails, 7 lifts, and a vertical drop of 1,000 feet. The ski resort has a tree nursery program, where they have planted over 30,000 White and Norway Spruce trees, which are well-suited to a ski environment. As mentioned above, it compares itself to a “Vermont-style ski experience—without the long drive.”
