While almost the entire ski resort industry is moving toward big-box corporate entities and mega-passes, Mount Bohemia in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is bucking the trend with its $99 season pass. Mount Bohemia is keeping skiing and snowboarding wild, with the most unique vibe I’ve ever experienced.

Would a $99 season pass get you stoked for the season? Yeah, me too. But how stoked would you be if I told you the $99 pass also comes with reciprocal days at hills and mountains all over the U.S. and Canada, full access to a legit outdoor Nordic Spa, and gnarly tree skiing with “no beginners allowed”?  Sounds amazing, right? It is.

If you haven’t heard about Mount Bohemia, let me give you the lowdown on this ridiculously fun mountain and all the season pass perks.

Sitting at the northernmost tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and surrounded on three sides by Lake Superior, Boho (as the locals call it) gets more than 275 inches of snow annually thanks to lake-effect storms rolling off the big lake. Boho doesn’t make any snow and doesn’t groom anything. Yep—no snowmaking, no grooming, just all-natural, all the time.

With 900 feet of vertical, Mount Bohemia is not your typical Midwest ski hill. It rides more like a mountain out west. The trail map is covered in black, double black, and even triple black runs.  From the top, you will see views of Lake Superior and Lac La Belle. The scenery is gorgeous, and the tree skiing is wildly fun—think a whole mountain of nicely spaced glades with varying degrees of steeps, including cliffs.

If you’ve never been to Boho, let me point out two of my favorite areas of the mountain: The Bear Den and Bohemia Mining Co.

I’ll draw your attention to the middle of the trail map, where you will find The Bear Den.  This area has a few runs that are a bit more open with fewer trees, but I like to pop in and out of the trees on Goldilocks and The Big Bad Wolf runs.  If you want to check out the Forbidden Cliffs, take Polar Bear to the skiers left, down to Teddy Bear and you will ride just underneath the cliff face to spot your line for your next cliff drop!

Over on the Bohemia Mining Co. side of the mountain (far left on the trail map), you will find both Prospector and Ghost Trail which are designated as blue runs.  The area around these runs is not as steep as other parts of the mountain and the glades are expertly spaced for those wanting to ski some easier tree runs.

$99 Season Pass also gets you access to the Nordic Spa

Back at the base area, you’ll find an impressive Nordic Spa, and full access is included with your $99 season pass. It’s loaded with amenities, including an outdoor hot tub, mineral pool, multiple types of saunas, eucalyptus steam room, cold plunge, heated pool, cool-mist rain cave, float pod, heated relaxation chairs, and an exfoliation room.

Season Pass partner resorts

Some people overlook the fact that season pass-holders also get reciprocal days at 29 different ski areas—from Lake Tahoe to Montana and Idaho to Quebec, plus plenty across the Midwest.  Reciprocal days mean that you can bounce around to other ski areas and get some excellent use out of that Boho season pass.

Of course, every good day on the mountain ends with some great après and Boho has you covered.  A brand-new Tiki Bar is opening this season, called “Boho’s Tiki Room” which adds to the already great options that include the Pizza Cabana, Log Cabin Bar, North Pole Bar, the main yurt cafeteria, and the Espresso Coffee Bar.

By now, you’re probably wondering where to stay to make the most of your time at Mount Bohemia.  There are a few different options on site at Boho, but I would point to the Trailside Yurts and Trailside Cabins which are ski in/ski out.  Your stay includes dinner and full access to the Nordic Spa as well.

Bottom line: if you’ve never been to Mount Bohemia, now’s the time. With a $99 season pass, reciprocal access at 29 other ski areas, a full Nordic Spa included, and some of the most unique all-natural tree skiing anywhere in North America, this is a pass you need in your life.
