Chair 1 evacuation @ Sunburst Ski Area

Sunburst Ski Area in Kewaskum, Wisconsin had an eventful opening day after a power outage prompted a chairlift evacuation and we are happy to report everyone was safely lowered to the slopes below thanks to the efforts of a fast acting local fire department.

The Kewaskum Fire Department were dispatched to the ski hill around 5:30 pm on Saturday and arrived within 10 minutes. The firefighters worked together with resort employees to safely evacuate 14 guests. The evacuating took around 40 minutes to complete. While seeing firefighters on a ski hill might seem alarming, in this case it was routine as the Kewaskum Fire Department trains annually with Sunburst for this exact scenario.

“Earlier this evening, a village power outage forced us to perform a chair evacuation on Chair 1. We want to extend a huge thank you to our team, who train for situations like this, and to the Kewaskum Fire Department for their quick and professional response. We’d also like to thank all of our guests for remaining calm, patient, and safe throughout the process. Your cooperation made a big difference.” -Sunburst Ski Resort

Sunburst rebounded nicely once the power was restored and opened up Sunday morning with ample new snow as they received nearly a foot from the winter storm that blew through the midwest.
