Bohemia only serves one master
But how can a ski resort in Michigan compete on a national level for tree skiing? Unlike traditional ski resorts that have mostly open runs cleared of trees, Bohemia is 80% gladed and never grooms. Mount Bohemia exists to bring the best possible tree skiing experience to advanced/expert skiers and riders across America. No beginner terrain and virtually no intermediate terrain just steep runs, chutes, cliff drops and tree runs. In fact Bohemia has the most inbounds tree skiing east of the Rockies beside Sugarloaf, Maine.
Bohemia’s Tree skiing is world class
Bohemia, a prehistoric volcano that averages almost 300 inches of snow a year, is truly special and skis amazingly like the best sections at a Utah ski resort. While Bohemia has open runs, the true feature of the mountain is the seven sections of inbounds backcountry areas. Remember that Bohemia’s gladed terrain is not simply a tree run in between two open runs. Most of the gladed terrain at Bohemia is huge swaths of continuous forest with glade runs thoughtfully carved out of these deep woods by Bohemia’s tree cutting glade crews.

The Haunted Valley/ Graveyard section/ Outback section
This glade section is made up of about 20 tree runs that all face north. These glades fall off the back of Bohemia and at the widest this section spans ¾ of a mile making the Haunted Valley/Graveyard backcountry section bigger than the entirety of many Midwest ski areas. Favorite runs in this section include the Bad Seed, Cursing Werewolf and the steep bobsled like run of Ghostly Godiva. These runs hit cat walks to get you back to the front side of the mountain and deliver you to the triple chairlift. The Outback runs usually get skied the least so they maintain some of the best snow. The Outback runs split between dropping into the Graveyard section and the other ones bringing you into the Middle Earth on Bohemia’s east side.

Tommyknockers. Badlands, and Bohemia Bluffs
This section is just past the Copper Plunge open run and these runs conveniently drop back to the triple. While there are a few small fun cliff drops, this section is best known for its long wide-open moderately pitched glades that roll enjoyably down the mountain. These sections are among the most popular on the mountain due to easy chairlift access and favorable wind drifted snow during the typical lake effect storm cycle that fill in this section of the mountain.

Extreme Backcountry
The crown jewel of Mount Bohemia is its middle section called The Extreme Backcountry. This section resembles western backcountry terrain with its steepness and multitude of natural features. Inside this expansive section is long steep gladed runs, chutes, and some big cliff drops. The middle of the Extreme Backcountry features Bohemia’s famed chutes and cliff drops. Horseshoe Chute has a side door for those looking for an easier entrance or when it is a powder day the most daring step up to the 40 foot cliff drop. Apex Chute right beside it offers much of the same, with another large cliff drop. To the left of the cliff drops is Flying Squirel and Sleepy Possum, two very steep but very well spaced out glade runs. For those looking for less adrenaline rush but want really long tree skiing with excellent fall line then go to the right side of the Extreme Backcountry and check out Brown Beagle and Woodpeckers Hollow. All of these runs bring you to the road where Bohemia’s shuttle buses operate all day long to swiftly return you back to the triple chairlift on the frontside.

Outer Limits
Heading eastward at Bohemia is the Outer Limits. Here is where Bohemia gets some of its deepest snowfall. The glades here are inside a large continuous forest. You will not see any nearby open runs. Some glades are rather mellow and just wind through the forest. Drop into Jupiter or Asteroid for a fun more wide open glade experience with a not so steep fall line. Continuing further east, the Planets of Uranus and Saturn have steep pitches and some nice small cliff drops. Go a little further past Uranus and you will find one of the least skied runs at Bohemia called Neptune. This is an excellent steep glade, with a few cliffs drops to its side, and many times untouched snow even at the end of a powder day. But for some of the most remote and least skied terrain on the mountain take your self to Martian and Spaceman. These two glades, built just two years ago, have steep entrances followed by a nice journey through the forest and likely untouched snow even the day after a powder day.

Middle Earth
Venturing further east using the same Outer Limits entrance you come to the Middle Earth. This section of east facing glades has some of the longest glades on the mountain and abundant snowfall. Numerous tree runs roll peacefully through the woods on low angle skiing. The Middle Earth is the opposite of the heart pounding thrill seeking Extreme Backcountry section. Instead this is more of a relaxing exploration through the far eastern forests on Bohemia. Try and find Helms Deep, an obscure glade run that will likely take a few attempts to find. The longest run in the Middle Earth is Mordor as it wanders through valleys on the east side of the mountain with many offshoots of other glade runs like Rohan and Rivendale.

Far East
The most remote and the newest section at Bohemia is The Far East. This is similar to Middle Earth in that Far East has abundant snowfall and long lower angle glades making it a perfect place to go late in the season or when you want a more relaxing run. The entrance just off to the left off Middle Earth’s Mordor brings you to Silk Road glade which starts off slow but eventually starts to get steeper before skiers have to chose to go left on the more gradual Monkey King run or right for the steeper Lotus Blossom. Either way some of the most scenic forest is located here in the Far East. These long glade runs eventually drop skiers onto Celestial Path glade that merges with the very bottom of Mordor before ending at Sand Point Road roughly 2 miles from the base area of Bohemia.

Little Boho
Just off the back of the parking lot sits Bohemia’s hike up hill known as Little Boho. The nice part of this, whether you skin up or hike up, is that where you start is already 2/3 of the way up Little Boho. The Bohemia shuttle bus does most of the work bringing you from the lake level bottom to the main parking lot, gaining 2/3 of the vertical. The tree runs in Little Boho start off rather gently until you get to the bottom half and then it flips the switch to become some of the toughest terrain on the mountain.
Experience Adventure
Bohemia is about exploration and adventure. No day is the same and every run through the forest can be a unique path to the bottom. It is a place so big you get lost but at the same time find yourself. Let this be the year you join the club. $99 season pass sale takes place November 26th through December 6th.
