Waitsfield, Vermont— In the midst of a pivotal capital project campaign, Mad River Glen is taking on another gigantic fundraising project.
Last week, Mad River Glen publicly announced that it’s being offered the chance to purchase around 1,100 acres of land that’s situated right next to the ski area. The land is currently owned by Lyme Mill Brook LLC, which is a foundation run by Lyme Timber Company. They offered it to the ski area for $2.5 million.
Mad River Glen exercised its Right of First Refusal (ROFR) and decided to proceed with a purchase of the land. The ski area is referring to acquiring the land as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure permanent ownership and preserve the unique terrain that offers amazing skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.” Shareholders of the co-op are expected to take on the brunt of the transaction. Donations from non-shareholders are also welcome.
The question would be what Mad River Glen would do with the land. Conservation is the most likely route, as hikers, snowshoers, and backcountry skiers use this land. The 19th and 20th holes refer to backcountry terrain. In particular, 19th Hole connects to the Mad River Barn, an inn and restaurant in Waitsfield. Could they develop some of the land into a new terrain pod? Yes, but I don’t really see it being a priority for them. The most likely route is for this area to become conservation land.
This news follows the announcement of another critical campaign at Mad River Glen. The ski area is currently raising $2 million to rebuild Stark’s Pub, which is in critical need of repairs. Other potential future projects include improvements to lifts and snow groomers.
