The Colorado Department of Transportation released updated Traction Law requirements last week ahead of holiday travel and an increase of drivers on the I-70 mountain corridor. The update was announced at the Gills Point S Tire & Auto in Golden, Colorado, alongside the Colorado State Patrol, AutoSock, and DriveSafe Colorado.
The updated law requires tires with a tread depth of at least 3/16-inch that are winter tires, all-weather rated tires, or mud and snow tires for all 4WD and AWD vehicles. Vehicles that don’t meet the standards will be required to have tire chains or an approved alternative traction device on two or more drive tires.
The Traction Law will be implemented by the Colorado Department of Transportation during winter storms or when conditions require. Traction Law, Passenger Vehicle Chain Law or Commercial Vehicle Chain Law can be implemented on any state highway, though the Traction Law is in effect every year from September 1st through May 31st along I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. All non-commercial motor vehicles are required to follow, and the punishment for noncompliance is a $50 and a $17 surcharge.
“It’s important for drivers to ensure that their tires are Traction Law compliant before heading up to the mountains this winter. Being prepared and following the law keeps everyone safe and helps prevent crashes and delays on Colorado’s roadways.” – CDOT Public Information Officer Andy Hogle.
In severe cases, the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law can be implemented requiring all vehicles to have chains or an approved alternative traction device.
