Alta Ski Area has officially closed Uphill Travel in preparation for the mountain’s opening. Uphill travel is usually open throughout the ski area’s off-season, though those choosing to take advantage of the terrain must do so at their own risk.
While uphill travel is closed on the ski area, the Summer Road is still open with access to Grizzly Gulch and Catherine’s Pass. Alta operates in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest under a special use permit with the Forest Service, allowing the restriction of uphill travel to protect ski area improvements, employees, skiers, and their product, and for operational and safety purposes.
Though uphill travel is closed for the time being, skiing and snowboarding at Alta isn’t that far away. Currently, Alta’s opening day is scheduled for this Friday, November 21st, as long as conditions allow. It’s not clear which trails or lifts will be available on opening day, but a look at the mountain live cameras shows a decent bit of snow on the trails.
