Everyone loves a ski resort legend, whether it’s a ski instructor who’s been there longer than the resort’s been open or a lifty who’s character has shined strong. Deer Valley‘s Snowmaking Senior Manager, Brett “Bear” Hawksford, is one of those legends, acting as a vital piece in keeping enough snow on the resort’s many trails. He took Ski Utah through a day in his life, from pre-sunrise to well after sunset.
“Meet one of Deer Valley’s snowmaking legends, Brett “Bear” Hawksford. For years, he’s been turning technology and teamwork into perfect corduroy. From manually moving snow guns around the mountain to implementing smart snowmaking systems, he’s helped shape the art (and science) of making snow in Utah’s mountains.“
Snowmakers are a part of a ski resort’s staff that you don’t see much of in the day-to-day. Their work starts long before most of us are awake, and it tends to end long after we’re off the mountain and relaxed. However without them, the ski season would be a much more variable time of year. It would probably start later than we’d like and end earlier, so cheers to them!
