MOAB, Utah — A 43-year-old BASE jumper dangling by his parachute hundreds of feet above the ground in the Kane Creek Recreation Area of Moab was rescued Wednesday thanks to the Grand County Sheriff’s Department rescue team.

The unidentified man was hoisted from the sheer rock face by crews lowered by a helicopter and taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries have not been released. Grand County Sheriff’s Department member Jamison Wiggins credits the cords from the BASE jumper’s parachute from preventing him from falling to his almost certain death.

November is a popular time of year for BASE jumpers in Moab and search and rescue crews have recently had to address similar incidents. This is the second BASE jumper incident in less than a week.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office was short on the details of the rescue operation originally issuing a statement for people to avoid the area during the airlift and updating that the BASE jumper was successfully rescued.
