Wolf released in Colorado back in 2023.

Another transplanted gray wolf, part of the state’s reintroduction program, has died in Colorado. According to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, a mortality alert for female gray wolf 2506 came through on October 30th, 2025.

The agency confirmed the mortality, saying that it took place in the Southwest region of the state. As gray wolves are federally listed under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the death.

At this time no cause of death has been made public. A final determination on the cause will not be made until the U.S. Fish and Wildlife investigation has completed, including a necropsy. The necropsy is considered a foundational component of the overall investigation process.

Female gray wolf 2506 was translocated to Colorado from British Columbia in January of 2025, alongside several other wolves. No further information has been released at this time.
