A hiker was safely rescued on La Plata Peak in Chaffee County, Colorado, after becoming separated from their group and going missing for several hours.
According to Chaffee County Search and Rescue North (CCSARN), the call came in at 4:30 PM on September 20th, 2025, when the missing hiker was reported to have separated from their group to head back to the trailhead. The individual was last seen around noon, and with inclement weather looming, CCSARN quickly mobilized ground teams to begin the search. Chaffee County Search and Rescue – South deployed drones to assist in the effort, while REACH Air Medical Services was requested for an aerial flyover of the area. However REACH was later forced to decline the request due to deteriorating weather conditions.
Fortunately ground teams eventually reported hearing a whistle in a drainage east and below the standard route. Following the sound, the team ascended the drainage and located the missing hiker 30 minutes later. The hiker was found safe, and all search teams were out of the field by 1:00 AM.
“This incident serves as a reminder to carry various forms of attraction. The subject’s continuous whistle blowing helped bring a safe ending to a potentially serious situation.” – CCSARN
The successful rescue was a collaborative effort, with thanks extended to Chaffee County Search and Rescue – South, REACH Air Medical Services, and CSAR for their support.
