It’s still September, and that means we’re still at least a handful of weeks away from ski and snowboard season here in the United States. In Chamonix, France, though, things are already starting to look very good. While most lifts aren’t open, those with the skills and knowledge necessary can access plenty of turns in the alpine. Chamonix Ski Bum‘s most recent conditions report from September 25th, 2025, shows just how good those conditions are looking.
Chamonix September Snow Report
In late September 2025, the alpine region is facing a transitional season with fluctuating weather. Warm valley temperatures (up to 85°F) contrast with sudden snowfalls, leaving a dusting below 1,800 meters and deep powder at Aiguille du Midi. Poor visibility and open crevasses make skiing hazardous, despite good snow conditions. Snow showers will persist, with freezing levels around 2,200 meters, but snow below 3,000 meters may not last until winter.
Mountaineering is looking solid on snow routes like the Liskamm Traverse and Monte Rosa, while mixed climbing emerges on routes like Sherry Kwa. Alpine rock climbing is largely over, but classics like Cosmiques Arête remain active. Skiers are currently hitting routes like Pointe Nationale in good conditions.
Infrastructure challenges include road closures from rockfalls, extending travel times, and most lifts/huts closing, except Aiguille du Midi and Cosmiques Refuge. It does seem like a warm spell is expected before December.
