When fall rolls around every year, the high-altitude landscapes of Colorado burst into vibrant colors of yellow, orange, and red, with snow-capped peaks framing the scene in the distance. Nestled among these mountains, the town of Silverthorne shines as a top leaf-peeping destination. Its stunning 360-degree views, accessible outdoor activities, multiple comfortable hotels, and diverse dining options make it an unbelievable fall escape. Make sure to plan your visit soon, as much of the state will be past peak color in just a few weeks.

Silverthorne, Colorado

Located within an hour-and-a-half drive from Denver, Silverthorne is one of the most accessible fall destinations in the state. With the town’s high elevation (~8,800 feet), the leaves are typically changing by mid-September into early October, earlier than many lower elevation locations. Silverthorne is surrounded by hiking trails and mountain roads, with a wide range of activities available for every skill level.

Outdoor Adventures

Of course the primary leaf-peeping adventure is hiking, and Silverthorne is full of trails and routes. Angler Mountain Trail offers a 4.2-mile, out-and-back route that gains 1,135 feet in elevation, all while providing stunning views of vibrant fall foliage throughout the valley. Ptarmigan Trail runs a bit longer, stretching closer to 4.8 miles with 1,164 feet of elevation gain. Remarkable views are easily available within just one mile of both trailheads, so don’t feel like you have to complete the whole thing if you aren’t feeling it. Plus, there’s plenty of other options in the area, some more difficult, some a bit easier. The Salt Lick Trail offers numerous different routes with a lower elevation gain, all while surrounded by the bright colors of fall.

If hiking isn’t really your thing, there are bountiful alternative adventures to be had. You can rent a paddleboard from Blue Valley Sports and take it up to the gorgeous North Pond Park (don’t forget to wear a life jacket). There are plenty of locations that rent mountain bikes as well, and multiple mountain bike-friendly trails to explore in the area. Silverthorne’s downtown area features a wide range of public art exhibits, providing a unique way to explore the town through the walking art tour. There’s much more to do, including fly fishing in the rivers and reservoirs, so don’t feel limited.

Food And Accommodations

When the outdoor activities have come to an end and you need a place to eat, you won’t have to go far. Silverthorne has a variety of restaurants, tap houses, and breweries to keep you full and hydrated throughout your stay. Angry James has a wide range of their own beers to choose from, and the connected Mountain Melt will melt your mind with their gourmet grilled cheeses. Thirsty Pika Taphouse features a 30-tap self-pour beverage wall with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Breakfast options aren’t limited either. Enzaโ€™s Delicatessen has fantastic coffee, phenomenal breakfast sandwiches and bowls, and a great range of sandwiches for lunch. Red Buffalo right next door has a wide selection of coffee, espresso, and teas to start your morning strong. For dinner, check out Kรบcu Tequila Bistro for tacos, burgers, and premium steaks (the Slow Cooked Country Style Ribs are amazing), or head to Eclectic Bar & Grill for its Barnyard Burger, Fish & Chips, or Smoked Bison Sandwich.

There are plenty of hotel and accommodation options throughout Silverthorne as well. The Hotel Indigo is located right in the center of town, within walking distance of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, and more. The hotel offer standard rooms, premium rooms, and suites (1- to 3- bedroom), plus free, covered parking in a garage next door. Additional amenities include the Kรบcu Tequila Bistro on the first floor, a pool, and a fitness center.

Head Up To Silverthorne

I’ve spent the past few days in Silverthorne, hiking the trails, paddleboarding, and everything else the town has to offer, and I’ve had an incredible time while doing it. As someone who frequently skis at the Summit County ski resorts, I’ve passed by Silverthorne on multiple occasions without stopping, never fully appreciating what Exit 205 off Interstate 70 has to offer. If you’re looking for a destination to check out the fall mountain leaves in Colorado, whether it’s for a day trip, a weekend stay, or a longer vacation, Silverthorne should be at the top of your list.
