Do you know what the snowiest country in the world is? You might guess something in the far north, like Canada or Finland, but you’d be wrong. If you’re an avid skier or snowboarder, there’s a good chance you already know the answer. The snowiest country in the world is Japan, with some regions seeing 600+ inches of snowfall every year.
16-26 feet of snow is fairly common in a single season in several areas throughout Japan. Sukayu Onsen in the Aomori Prefecture is often called the snowiest inhabited location on the planet.
The bountiful snow in Japan is due to the country’s location, with cold air from Siberia colliding with the warm waters of the Sea of Japan to massive snowfalls across the country. Of course this makes for some iconic powder skiing.
