UNITED STATES – As unfortunate as it is, bikers getting hit by cars is a fairly common occurrence. The chances of getting hit just goes up based on how much you ride on the road, and knowing what to do after being in an accident could save you some day. Obviously the first thing to do after any accident is going to be getting the necessary medical attention, but being able to actually get the money you need from an insurance company can be very important as well. Seth from Berm Peak was in a bike crash (not involving a car) several years ago, and he learned the hard way how difficult it can be to deal with these insurance companies.
Berm Peak talks to Ann Groninger, a North Carolina based bicycle attorney, in the video. She’s a founder of Bike Law, a network for independent bicycle crash attorneys across the United States. They don’t have every state covered, but lawyers from any states can be discovered through the website, and information needed on bicycle law in several states in available as well. Understanding this information could save you a whole lot of time, money, and stress someday, so it’s worth taking a look.
Below is Berm Peak’s checklist for what to do if you’re hit by a car as a cyclist. These notes aren’t just for the person hit, either. If you’re riding with friends or a group, everyone can help out getting these things done, especially if the person hit is injured.
Checklist:
- Look for witnesses
- File a police report
- Take photos at the scene
- Save your bike and helmet
- Take notes
