Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has reported on the mortality of female gray wolf 2304 that occurred in Wyoming. The wolf died on July 24th, 2025. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is now coordinating with Wyoming Game and Fish for the return of their tracking collar. Unfortunately Wyoming state law stops the sharing of further details.
Gray Wolf 2304
Female gray wolf 2304 was part of a group of wolves translocated from Oregon to Colorado as part of a reintroduction effort approved by Colorado voters back in 2020. Wolves travel long distances for food or mates, and that includes into other states. Colorado Parks and Wildlife does not discuss the wildlife movements, operations, or regulations in other states, and there has not further comment on the mortality of gray wolf 2304.
Other Wolf Deaths In Colorado
On April 20th, 2025, gray wolf 2514 died due to apparent injuries from a mountain lion attack. The death occurred in Rocky Mountain National Park.
On May 15, 2025, gray wolf 2512 was died from secondary trauma from a legal foothold trap designed for coyote control. While Colorado typically bans the use of foothold traps, the state does grant exemptions to owners of property used for commercial livestock production or their designated agents for a 30-day period if they meet proper criteria.
The trapper did notify Colorado Parks and Wildlife when they discovered the wolf. CPW received a mortality alert a day later. On May 31st, 2025, gray wolf 2507 died. The investigation into that wolf’s death is still underway.
