Wild video from Italy where a glacial collapse was caught on video. The scene unfolded on the Ortles Glacier in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy bordering Switzerland and Austria. It wasn’t just lucky timing that the collapse was filmed as hiker Paola Giacopuzzi as had heard humbling from above for several minutes and decided to pull out his phone and record.
Thankfully there are no reports of injuries in this incident but similar events have been fatal in the recent past. In 2022 a partial collapse of Marmolada Glacier in Italy killed 11 and injured 8. These types of events are hard to predict as monitoring is limited but if you plan on exploring the high alpine in Italy in the safest way possible its highly recommended to reference local advisories, avoid high-risk zones, and follow evacuation orders if given.
