Elk charges hiker @ Grand Teton National Park

This Grand Teton National Park hiker came to a rapid understanding why park regulations require visitors maintain at least 25 yards distance from elk at all times.

According to Grand Teton elk management, there are around 1,600 elk that roam the park’s 485 square miles during the summer season. Many of these elk have become habituated to human presence and can be found congregating in developed areas of the park. There are variety of reasons for this preference, but one obvious factor is the perceived safety human developments provide from natural predators.

Given that the many of the elk have lost their natural fear of humans and linger in populated areas, Grand Teton cautions guests to keep a safe distance away from elk and give them right of way if they are blocking trails. Unfortunately this hiker learned the hard why its wise to heed this rule:

Thankfully the elk pulled up short and the threat of an immanent attack was enough to send the man in the opposite direction. The rules for viewing wildlife safely inside Grand Teton are quite simple to understand and easy to follow. Remember folks, bull elk can weigh up to 1,300 pounds and can inflict serious damage if antagonized, give them space so you don’t end up like this guy.
