Corbet's Couloir without snow @ Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is home to one of the most iconic and intimidating ski runs in the world and seeing it in the summer without a thick coat of snow makes it all the more impressive.

Corbet’s Couloir has long been a magnet for skiers and snowboarders in the Tetons to test their skills on extremely steep inbounds terrain and local big mountain skier/mountaineer Owen Leeper decided to visit his preferred winter stomping grounds in the dog days of summer. If you thought the mandatory 20-foot drop-in and 50° pitch runout seemed borderline undoable in February, seeing them in July will not boost your confidence.

“No ski resort in North America has a chute so legendary as Corbet’s Couloir in Wyoming—a crucible where skiers go to prove their mettle (or more often, to retreat in fear). The run is named for Barry Corbet, a mountaineer who in 1960 spotted a narrow crease of snow shaped like an upside-down funnel, high up on the mountain now known as Jackson Hole. Said he: “Someday someone will ski that.” -Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

About Corbet’s Couloir:

Jackson Hole offers diverse terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, but no discussion of this iconic destination would be complete without mentioning Corbet’s Couloir. With a 20-foot drop and 50-degree pitch, it’s one of the steepest ski slopes in North America. Known as one of the craziest ski resorts, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort brings skiers from around the world to test their limits on this legendary terrain. The Aerial Tram cruises right by Corbet’s on its way to the top, offering skiers/riders a glimpse of the famed couloir. And if you’re hungry for waffles, check out the famous Corbet’s Cabin.
