Alaska has some of the largest, most beautiful national parks in the country with preserved land stretching from the state’s southern areas to its northern reaches. And yet with their remoteness, many of these parks are among the least visited in the country.
Beyond National Parks, Alaska is home to National Historic Parks, National Monuments, and National Preserves, making for 16 National Park units. The park service puts the total number at 23, counting the 6 combined National Parks & Preserves and 1 National Monument & Preserve as 2 separate units. National Park Diaries took a look at Alaska’s sites, explaining how they originated and what they protect.
