Grand Canyon National Park is reassuring the public that the park’s bison herds have remained mostly unimpacted by the growing Dragon Bravo Fire burning on parts of the North Rim.

According to the park, the bison herds’ migratory patterns have kept them mostly away from the burn and crews are actively working to ensure it stays that way. Fire personnel continue to monitor the situation to protect both natural resources and wildlife to the best of their abilities.

Bison only live along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The Kaibab Plateau Bison Herd is co-managed by Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona Game & Fish, and the Kaibab National Forest.

As of Wednesday, July 16th, the Dragon Bravo Fire has grown to 9,289 acres. It began on July 4th, 2025, due to a lightning strike, and has since grown on the park’s North Rim. Currently 0% of the fire is contained, though 529 personnel are working to suppress the burn.
