National Parks are staple of the United States. They protect the country’s most unique and stunning landscapes from the East Coast to the West. Many of our favorite national parks have been around for well over 100 years and we couldn’t imagine the country without them. While it seems impossible for a national park to simply stop existing, 5 already have throughout the history of the National Park system.
Three of these locations are still within the National Park system, Lincoln National Park (today known as Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park), Fort McHenry (today known as Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine), and Platt National Park (today part of Chicksaw National Recreation Area). Others have since become state parks or lost designations altogether.
National Park Diaries took a look at these areas that have since lost their National Park designation status.
