Situated near Sunday River Resort and the New Hampshire-Maine border, hiking Mount Success is a memorable experience. With a peak elevation of 3565 feet, it falls just short of the 4000″ club, a group of 48 mountains in New Hampshire that hikers aim to ascend. It is a part of the 52 With A View, though! Additionally, there’s another aspect that draws hikers and enthusiasts of abandoned treasures to this location.

Back in 1954, a Northeast Airlines flight en route to Berlin (NH) was caught in a severe snowstorm, resulting in the plane crashing onto Mount Success. Somehow, every person on the plane survived the initial landing. However, two airline workers died while waiting for rescuers. Around seven decades later, the plane remains standing on Mount Success. Shockingly, many parts of the airplane remain, although many have sketched their name onto it.

In a recent video from Derek Fobare, he shares the hiking experience going up and down the trail, along with what remains of the plane.

Going up Mount Success is a 6.5-mile round-trip hike. According to AllTrails, the challenging hike is approximately four hours long. While the plane isn’t technically a part of the trail, but the AllTrails map does help you find the plane. Alternatively, those hiking the Appalachian Trail can take a short detour to check it out.

As always, we’ll send out an obligatory reminder to leave no trace, and keep this relic as it was before you got there.
