Revelstoke, British Columbia — While it was a snowy season for Revelstoke Mountain Resort, it wasn’t without its mishaps.
CTV News reported in April that Revelstoke Mountain Resort was fined $78,369.61 CAD (roughly $57,000 USD) by WorkSafeBC. The fine, which was given back in March, was over a series of violations that resulted in the severe injury of an employee.
While riding in a utility vehicle, an employee was installing signs in one of Revelstoke’s parking lots. While backing up the vehicle, it went over a steep embankment, resulting in severe injuries for the individual.
There were several violations in this situation. The first requirement was for there to be a barrier (curb or guardrail) in the area around the embankment, which would’ve prevented the situation from occurring. The vehicle didn’t have rearview mirrors, which are also required by BC’s government. The employee was also not wearing a seatbelt, which resulted in another violation.
Fines by WorkSafeBC are calculated by the payroll of the company, along with whether they’re identified as a repeat offender.
