Drone restrictions @ Parks Canada
Drone restrictions @ Parks Canada

With the peak months of summer tourism just around the corner the folks at Canada’s Jasper National Park decided the time was right to remind visitors to leave their drones at home or possibly face fines up to $25,000 CAD.

“Drone flying is a popular hobby for many people and may also be used for commercial purposes. However, drones can pose risks to visitors, disturb wildlife and lead to negative experiences for other visitors to Jasper National Park. For these reasons, Parks Canada strictly limits the use of drones. Anyone caught operating a drone within park boundaries and without an approved permit may result in law enforcement action and a fine of up to $25,000.”

There are very specific instances where drone flights are allowed in the national parks of Canada but only with a Restricted Activity Permit issued by park superintendents for purposes including natural or cultural resource management and protection, public safety, law enforcement and park/site management purposes directly relating to park administrative purposes. The application process for a Restricted Activity Permit requires a written proposal that must clearly demonstrate how your intended use of a drone falls under the above categories.

JASPER NATIONAL PARK STATEMENT:

Leave the flying to the birds. Recreational use of drones is not permitted in Parks Canada places, including Jasper National Park.

This restriction is important to ensure the safety of wildlife and the quality of experience for all of our visitors. Enjoy the peaceful trails and leave your drone at home.

If you witness the use of a drone in Jasper National Park, please report the incident to park wardens via Jasper Dispatch 780-852-6155.
