Greenwood, Maine — The noise from a generator at a local resident’s home could impact the future of a Maine ski area.

In the town of Greenwood, a proposed noise ordinance will be heard at a town meeting on May 19th at 9 a.m. The proposed ordinance would limit noise levels to 70 dBa (decibels) during the day and 45 dBa in the evening. Some exceptions are allowed for road crews, but none are listed for Mt. Abram.

According to WGME, the noise ordinance was brought forth due to a resident, not the ski area’s noisy generator, which can be heard from another house.

“A lady who lives in the southern part of the town had an issue with her neighbor running a generator 24/7,” said Kim Sparks, the Greenwood Town Manager, to WGME. “She said it ruined her peaceful life. She couldn’t sit outside any longer and enjoy her backyard.”

This proposal has resulted in various residents and businesses speaking out against it, including the town’s ski area. Last Friday, Mt. Abram spoke out against the ordinance on Facebook. In the press release, Mt. Abram stated that this would not allow them to make snow in the evening, along with not being able to host concerts in the summer (and likely in the winter). The letter didn’t say the quiet part out loud, which is that the ordinance would impact the future viability of the ski area.

The Maine ski area called on local residents to show up at the Greenwood Legion Hall on May 17th at 9 a.m. to oppose the ordinance.

In the midst of all this noise, Mt. Abram is preparing for a busy summer. During the offseason, Mt. Abram is home to a popular mountain biking park.
