Back in July of this year, Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin saw a massive hydrothermal explosion that garnered attention from around the world. Several people caught the incident on camera and debris was shot high into the sky, sparking concern over what the explosion meant for the stability of Yellowstone. Fortunately the explosion was not volcanic, and wasn’t even that unheard of.
In fact according to Yellowstone Volcano Observatory Scientist-in-Charge Mike Poland, this wasn’t even the only hydrothermal explosion to in the park this year. A small yet notable explosion occurred at 2:56 in the afternoon of April 15, 2024.
“The hydrothermal explosion in Biscuit Basin stole all the headlines. But did you know there was a smaller hydrothermal explosion in Norris Geyser Basin on April 15, 2024? That explosion was detected by a new infrasound sensor installed this past September.“
