At approximately 3:17pm on Tuesday, December 3, Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR) was called in to respond to an avalanche incident on Colorado’s Berthoud Pass. A backcountry skier had gotten caught and injured in the slide but was able to remove themselves from the debris.
Due to injuries, the individual was unable to ski out of the forest and multiple agencies, including Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Grand County Emergency Medical Services (GCEMS), East Grand Fire Protection District, and Grand County Search and Rescue, responded.
GPS coordinates from the skier’s cell phone allowed GCSAR & GCEMS to locate the individual, treating them for multiple injuries and mild hypothermia. The skier was brought back to Highway 40 using a rescue toboggan and rope uphaul systems.
“GCSAR encourages all backcountry adventurers to prioritize safety and preparedness. Essential gear, such as a rescue beacon, shovel, and probe, are crucial for self-rescue in avalanche situations. Additionally, it’s imperative to have the skills and knowledge to use this equipment effectively.” – Grand County Search and Rescue
