Nothing hits quite as hard as an action sports edit designed to mimic the crazy media of the 80s. In Rip Curl’s latest short surf movie Lazer Breathing Dragons, 8x World Champion Stephanie Gilmore joins Tom Curren and Mason Ho as she redefines surfing in her mind following a depart from the Championship Tour.

As the name suggests, the movie is filled with lasers, 80s techno, trippy shots, and VCR effects. Some of it truly feels like it was pulled directly from a mediocre 80s sci-fi movie. All of it feels like some epic surfing.

“All my life I’ve surfed with primarily one major purpose. To go fast with fierceness and style. That was my purpose. I don’t know what is next for me. I don’t know what is next for my surfing. But I’m very excited about it. That is my Search.” – Stephanie Gilmore

Lazer Breathing Dragons takes cues from the wild fun of the 1980s – a decade when both Steph and Mason were born, and when Curren won his first two world titles. Rather than exploring brand new places, it’s about exploring a different mindset to competition and always pushing the limits of performance. There’s laybacks, cut downs, hair flicks, and streetside soup selling. There’s rodeos and monkeys. Take 15 minutes out of your day to escape to a different headspace.
