Most of Yellowstone National Park’s roads will soon be inaccessible to the public as the park prepares for the winter season. The last day to drive through the West, South and East entrances, in addition to most roads inside the park, will be October 31.
Through Yellowstone’s winter season, only the road connecting North and the Northeast entrances remains open to automobiles, while many roads open to snowmobiles and snowcoach travel. Those activities begin on December 15.
Those who hope to visit the park in the fall or winter should prepare for changing weather conditions and have flexible plans. Services will be limited throughout the winter months, and road closures, even on the roads meant to stay open through the year, are very much possible due to inclement weather.
With all that said, winter visits to Yellowstone come with their own remarkable charm, with warming huts providing shelter from the weather and snow-covered geothermal features providing a unique sight.
