This past weekend was a good one for storm totals across the western United States, with the mountains of Colorado specifically seeing a nice dose of pow. So good that Southern Colorado’s Wolf Creek Ski Area is set to open tomorrow, 10/22, for seven days a week of skiing. But that’s enough looking at the past. What does Meteorologist Chris Tomer forecast for our future?
Chris Tomer has been in mountain weather for around 20 years, consulting for mountaineering expeditions and operations around the world. He’s consulted for expeditions on all 14 of the world’s 8,000 meter peaks. In his near daily Mountain Weather Updates, Tomer provides snow forecasts for skiers, snowboarders, and other winter recreators across North America, helping them plan their next several days of activity.
October 23/30 will once again be a fairly snowy period for the west, with the Pacific Northwest set to see the most. In parts of British Columbia and northern Washington, 1-2 feet of snowfall could hit the mountains. Thursday of this week will bring high winds to Colorado, reaching above 50mph in some places along the continental divide. Throughout the entire period, Utah’s Wasatch Mountains could see 3-6 inches, parts of Colorado could see 4-10 inches, Idaho & Western Montana could see 4-8 inches, and the Tetons could see more than a foot. And if that wasn’t enough, another storm system seems to be developing starting on 10/30.
