BARCELONA, Spain – Kai Lenny can say he’s done quite a lot. Pro surfer, windsurfer, kitesurfer, foilboarder, and now pro sailor? Well not really, but he can say he’s been part of the crew on one of the fastest sailboats in the world, and he’s raced it on his foilboard.
“One of my dreams came true when I got the call up to not only race my Wing Foil against the AC 72 (Alinghi Red Bull Racing America’s Cup) but to be a crew member on board cycling. The biggest surprise while I was there was getting to helm the AC40, something I definitely didn’t think I would ever get to do!“
The AC72 is a 72-foot catamaran with a wingsail. They were first launched in July, 2012, and began racing in the America’s Cup in 2013. The boat’s introduction brought the foil into the race. The AC72 has since been replaced in the America’s Cup by the AC75, and in 2024, new foiling monohulls will take the lead. the monohull that Lenny raced in this video was an AC75.
