Horseback rider encounters grizzly bear @ Glacier National Park

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, Montana – Privately owned horses are allowed in many National Parks across the country, including Glacier National Park in Montana. Horseback riding may only be permitted some sections National Parks so anyone riders should research thoroughly and plan accordingly. Another important consideration before riding a horse into a National Park is wildlife encounters. Riders should be aware of what species they may encounter on the trail and if you are in Glacier National Park, that includes grizzly bears.

It seems pretty evident this rider is acquainted with this Glacier National Park grizzly bear as she refers to it as “Linda.” However, no matter your level of familiarity with an individual grizzly, you should never continue to approach one after you see it on the trail whether on foot or in the saddle. While some say you’re safer on horseback as you appear larger, there are no guarantees as to what a grizzly might do.

Glacier National Park is home to an estimated 300 grizzly bears. Failing to maintain proper distance from a grizzly regardless of your mode of travel can lead to serious consequences.

Glacier National Park Guidelines Maintaining Distance From Bears:

Intentionally approaching, viewing, or engaging in any activity within 100 yards (91 m) of bears or wolves is prohibited. Maintain 25 yards (23 m) from any other wildlife. If you’re causing the behavior of the animal to change, you’re too close. Use binoculars or a telephoto lens to improve your view. Keep the wildlife’s line of travel or escape route clear and move away if an animal approaches you.

Never intentionally get close to a bear. Individual bears have their own personal space requirements, which vary depending on their mood. Each will react differently, and their behavior cannot be predicted. All bears are dangerous and should be respected.
