The Guinness World Record for the world’s longest bicycle has been broken by a Dutch team of engineering enthusiasts who created this monstrosity of a two wheeled machine that measured an incredible 180 feet and 11 inches (equivalent to four double decker busses).
The team was led by 39-year-old Ivan Schalk, who’s been planning on breaking the record since he was a child. Schalk has a background in building carnival floats so he was well acquainted with the design challenges of making massive objects move. Schalk enlisted volunteers from his local carnival and they got to work producing the front and rear components in house while purchasing the center span from a company that manufactures long steel structures.
Propelled by one rider in the back and one up front the steer, the mega bike rode the 100-meter distance on road in Prinsenbeek, Netherlands, to achieve the Guinness World Records title (the bike can be ridden with 4 riders pedaling in back but that wouldn’t have qualified for the record).
The project was a success and congratulate the team. If you would like to check out the record setting bike now be exhibited in the local history museum in Prinsenbeek.
