The summit of Mount Vinson
The summit of Mount Vinson

ANTARCTICA – Mount Vinson, part of the Vinson Massif, is the tallest mountain in Antarctica. Located in the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains, its summit sits 4,892 meters, or 16,050 feet, above sea level. It’s one of the Seven Summits, the tallest mountains on each continent, making it a must for hungry mountaineers. Mountaineering Bob filmed his journey to the top as his last of the Seven Summits earlier this year.

After spending nearly a year preparing for this expedition, I now spend over 30 hours flying to Antarctica to attempt to scale Mount Vinson, my final Seven Summits peak.

According to National Geographic, the Ellsworth Mountains were first spotted by air in 1935, but nobody starting exploring the beasts until the 1960s. Between December of 1966 and January of 1967, a group of American Antarctic Mountaineers reached the summit of the continent’s tallest mountain. Mount Vinson is not an incredibly difficult mountain to summit in the technical perspective, but the cold weather and remote location make it much more challenging.
