Italy — Each summer, ski mountaineers make the daunting journey to the world’s loneliest hotel.
The Capanna Regina Margherita (Margherita Hut) first opened in 1889. Run by the Italian Alpine Club, it stands 14,941 feet above sea level. The hut is used as a research station and as a hut for overnight travelers. It’s typically open for guests in the summertime, offering meals and beds for mountaineers. While the hotel technically isn’t open to guests during the wintertime, the entrance area is still open in case of emergencies.
In Yes Theory’s latest video, Thomas Brag traveled to this hut with friend Ammar, videographer Etienne, and ski guide Jules Pession to have some tasty grub, experience a stellar sunrise, and ski down. It’s a tricky voyage to the Margherita Hut due to elevation sickness, varying weather conditions, and the risk of falling into a crevasse. On the uphill ski journey to the Hut, they stop at Rifugio Gnifetti, which also features some cozy lodging and delicious food.
The only bummer about the video is that it mostly focuses on the ascent and stay at the hotel, and the downhill skiing footage is only around a minute. Still, it’s a good video guide for mountaineers who someday dream of visiting the highest building and hotel in Europe.
