Solo rower joined by pilot whale super-pod in the North Atlantic.

Ski instructor Tom Waddington was alone in the middle of the ocean during his attempt to break the world record for rowing across the North Atlantic when was joined by a super-pod of long-finned pilot whales. At first there were 10, then there were 20, by the end Waddington estimates 1000 whales joined him on his trip rowing 2,000 nautical miles from the coast of Newfoundland to the United Kingdom in an effort raise awareness for mental health issues. The whales tagged along for more than 2 hours and he thoroughly enjoyed their company, although he became a bit concerned when one smacked into his small vessel:

“I was like, Oh my God. And suddenly it turned from David Attenborough into Moby Dick. And I was really scared.

Their appearance came on a dreary day when Waddington was feeling bit low and helped reinvigorate him on his solitary quest across the North Atlantic. If you like to track his progress go HERE.

Fundraising for Mind, Tom’s Solo North Atlantic Row:

On the 17th of June 2024, Tom Waddington is heading out on a truly inspirational and record breaking endeavor. To become the fastest man in history to row from Canada to the UK across the North Atlantic Ocean. Mind Oar Matter is a declaration that with enough commitment and determination we can overcome the physical and mental challenges we face, no matter how insurmountable they seem. This expedition will allow Tom to share his message, long-backed by science, that sport and exercise elevates mood and mental well-being. Tom’s passion for this cause, comes from dealing with monumental loss and grief of his own.

The mission is simple: to promote mental health awareness, so suffering people will take action, seek help and get physically active via sports or exercise! Tom is passionate about raising £50,000 over the course of his row, for the charity Mind, a charity that provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. With a mission to not give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect. DONATE HERE.
