There’s no doubt that Colorado has some of the best skiing in the world. The variety of terrain, quality and consistency of snow, and just general number of ski resorts puts the state on several skiers’ and snowboarders’ bucket lists. Not to mention, many of the towns surrounding the mountains are quaint, beautiful experiences on their own.

Ask anyone who lives on the Front Range, though, and you’ll hear the same complaint again and again. The drive sucks. To make your way from Denver to most of the state’s ski areas, you’ll have to take Interstate 70, and Interstate 70 is a beast.

As it turns out, Colorado skiers aren’t alone in believing that I-70 sucks. Thanks to the people at Volvo, we now know the top 100 most loathed highways in the United States. The company surveyed 3,000 drivers to find some answers, and I-70 ranked fifth. The highway’s habit of clogging up with traffic and Eisenhower Tunnel’s lovely habit of fully closing in high weather were specifically highlighted in the survey’s results.

Other possible contributors to I-70s status as fifth most loathed highway include the incredible number of small-car-accident-sized pot holes found along the road, the numerous out-of-state and in-state drivers who refuse to get vehicles that can actually handle the steep hills and questionable weather, and, of course, the steep hills and questionable weather (these are all based on my own experiences, not anything scientific).

Three of the four highways ahead of I-70 were, surprise surprise, located in California. Specifically US-101 around San Francisco and LA, I-5 running through LA, and I-405 through San Diego. I-76 in Pennsylvania ranked fourth. Other highlights further down the list include Alabama’s I-65 at sixth, Delaware’s DE-1 at seventh, and I-87 through New York at eighth. Make sure to check out the list to see if your least favorite highway made it!
