We posted an article last week claiming that Warren Miller Entertainment (WME) would not have a new movie this year.

Hand up. We were wrong.

Warren Miller Entertainment will in fact have a new movie, but it will look a little bit different than the 73 that have proceeded it.

We spoke with a representative from Outside, the parent company of Warren Miller Entertainment, to clear the air about what viewers can expect this year.

SPOILER: It sounds very exciting.

WME is planning a two year celebration leading up to their 75th anniversary in 2024.

This year’s film will be a retrospective look to explore how and why Snowsports have become a passion and way of life for so many.

Here’s a direct quote explaining what the film will feature when audiences see it later this fall. It clears up any confusion on whether this year’s film will be “new”, or not:

“We aren’t simply re-running old film segments; while the film is archive-driven, it will be unlike anything audiences have seen to date, with entirely new editing, soundtracks, narration, and more.

There will be never-before-seen footage from the archive, and there will be some new skiing and snowboarding, as well.”

WME is still planning an exciting tour to screen the film for audiences across the country.

Details on the tour aren’t set in stone yet, but WME is working on “exciting changes” to make the in-theatre experience better than ever.

Warren Miller (director) - Wikipedia

^Warren Miller was a legendary figure in building the modern ski industry that we know today. WME is aiming to showcase that in this year’s film.

Many of you are probably wondering why WME decided to make this significant change in their normal mold of annual film releases.

That’s understandable.

WME’s goal is to pay homage to Warren Miller’s historic career, and to recognize everything that has gotten them to this point ahead of the 75th anniversary.

Still unsure? We asked what WME would say to audience members that are concerned about the break in the ‘traditional’ film release:

“We might be going about this year’s film in a different way than we’ve traditionally done, but the end result will be a movie that will get people cheering, laughing, and leaving theaters as excited as ever for the official start to winter.”

To summarize, WME isn’t releasing a traditional film featuring entirely new skiing and snowboarding clips, and that’s okay!

This year’s film will instead be a look back at the last 74 years (plus new clips) to set up the 75th anniversary next year.

While 2023 will be a look back, 2024 will be a look forward.

Here’re more details:

“The second part of this two-year project will focus on the future of ski and snowboard filmmaking, and feature all new action and storytelling.

We’re excited to collaborate on this film with a diverse roster of filmmakers and athletes, both known and unknown, for this second film. If Part 1 is a look back, Part 2 will definitely be a look forward.”

WME is planning a regular tour to screen 2024’s film.

^Thousands of us will gather in theatres to watch a new WME film this fall.

Let’s all take a collective breath.

Change can be scary, but it sounds like WME and Outside are still invested in making exciting films about skiing and snowboarding.

We’re glad to be able to clear the air, and we’re stoked to check out the new film later this year!
