While there isn’t much snow in Austria right now, tackling the challenge of avalanches remains a priority for them. In Austria, there were over one hundred avalanches in 2021, which resulted in fourteen people dying. A new documentary from Deutsche Welle dove into the various techniques and technologies that go into avalanche mitigation.

The documentary interviews ski patrollers, scientists, and teachers to discuss this difficult process. The techniques and methods discussed include controlled avalanches via explosives, snow catchers, training classes, transceivers, fully automated avalanche systems, and more.
