A Colorado man died over the weekend near the summit of Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Russell Jacobs, 25, of Westminster, found himself lost and trapped by inclement weather on the 14er late on Friday afternoon.
Unprepared for the harsh weather, Jacobs called a friend to report he was in trouble. In his last communication, he told Park Rangers that he would try to reach the Agnes Vaille Shelter.
According to a press release, the weather on Long Peak that night was wintery with snow, ice, 35 plus mile-per hour winds, below-freezing temperatures, and bitter wind chill.
Jacobs’ body was located approximately 80 feet above The Ledges by park visitors.
It has not yet been reported if Jacobs’ succumbed to hypothermia or if he was killed in a fall.
Longs Peak is the highest point in Rocky Mountain National Park.
