VIDEO: NZ Skier Successfully Deploys Airbag After Triggering Avalanche

Hiking up heard a ‘whumpf’ ( the noise of a weak layer collapsing in the snowpack), saw no fracturing, thought that’s high enough… skied intended line, 3 turns in it hit…. Airbag deployed about 50 meters into ride, snow was mid thigh and the airbag held me up… Moral of the story, be aware of the terrain you are entering, have the gear and know how to use it, remain calm, listen to your gut, when that sound happens (whumpfing) danger is imminent, don’t ski alone.”

Scary scene caught on camera in New Zealand where a skier triggered a storm slab and got taken for a ride. Thankfully an airbag backpack helped keep them afloat and they made it out okay.
