Brundage Mountain Resort, located near McCall, Idaho, took to social media last night to ask guests to avoid the area as a new fire had broken out.

The resort shared a post from The US Forest Service- Payette National Forest that stated that the fire was estimated to be 15 acres and located “at the top of Brundage Mountain” as of 9:20PM MT last night.

The fire is believed to have been started by a lightning strike. More info, and a video and picture of the fire, can be found in the Facebook post below.

The US Forest Service- Payette National Forest: “Update, September 7, 9:20p.m.: New Fire. This fire is burning on top of Brundage Mountain and named the Rainbow Fire. Smokejumpers jumped the fire just before dark to get firefighters on site as quickly as possible, and three engines are currently on site as well. The fire is estimated at 15 acres. The fire is visible from McCall and New Meadows. Video clip and photo added – Initial Attack on the Rainbow Fire.”

A Brundage Mountain Resort representative has stated the following about the fire:

The fire was started by a lightning strike from the thunderstorms that rolled through the area between 7-8 pm last night. (9/7)

It struck the summit ridge of the mountain, north of the main part of the ski area. The fire then spread to the north into an area called Hidden Valley and AWAY from the nearest lift terminal (the BlueBird Express). There is also a Ski Patrol facility and a communications tower on the ridge, but again, the fire so far has been moving away from those.”

“Obviously, we’re all hoping the winds don’t shift and push the fire back toward the ski area. A cold front moved in last night behind those thunderstorms so that should help in the firefighting efforts. The FS dropped Smokejumpers on the fire right before dark and sent 3 engines up overnight for initial attack.”

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that everybody stays safe, and that the ski area doesn’t sustain any serious damages.
