Here at Unofficial Networks, we love all dogs. Cute dogs, hero dogs, stupid dogs, silly dogs… they all catch our attention. And you know what, I may catch some flack for saying this, but if you’ve got a problem with dogs, (excluding those who have been attacked by dogs and have a legitimate fear of them) I’ve got a problem with you.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I would never adopt a chihuahua, Chinese Crested terrier, or any other little dog (they’re just not my type, I prefer the big guys) but I appreciate the love that can come from them. Not only that, but I appreciate the love that comes from ugly dogs.

That’s why I, personally, am a huge fan of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest. From Chinese Crested terriers to bulldogs to basset hound/beagle mixes, all of the world’s goofy, ratty, and weird looking dogs are put on display. With a cash prize and fame on the table, the competition is often quite fierce.

This year, the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog competition almost certainly earned it. Mr. Happy Face, a chihuahua mix, earned his owner, Jeneda Benally, $1,500 and a trip to New York, with guest appearance on the Today Show. Though Mr. Happy Face came from an abusive life in the home of a hoarder, and though he struggles to stand up and fails to hold his head straight, it seems as if his current owner gives him all the love in the world, and that’s what’s important.

Yes, on the surface, this competition seems to be shaming these poor dogs for their disfigurements and life struggles. But, in reality, it encourages and promotes the adoption of dogs who may not receive a happy life otherwise. So, if you’ve got it in you to take care of a dog that happens to be cute in a few unconventional ways, I encourage you to go to your local shelter, pick the dog most likely to scare children away, and give him or her the best life possible.
